The West Louisville Outdoor Recreation Initiative Master Plan has received the 2017 KYASLA Honor Award in the Planning & Analysis category for the expansion of nature-based recreation, education and stewardship. The award recognizes excellence in the profession of landscape architecture in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

The West Louisville Outdoor Recreation Initiative connects underserved populations in West Louisville’s neighborhoods to quality-of-life-enhancing recreational opportunities. MKSK led a multi-disciplinary team of engineers and to master plan innovative recreational opportunities within three historic parks located along the Ohio River— Shawnee Park, Chickasaw Park, and Portland Wharf Park (Shawnee and Chickasaw Parks design by Fredrick Law Olmsted). The planning process included an interactive community engagement program to help determine the most popular and desired recreation opportunities. The plans for each park introduce unique and accessible spaces that encourage nature-based activity for all ages.

The awards ceremony will take place on Friday, March 3 at the Muhammad Ali Center in Louisville, Kentucky during the 2017 Annual Conference.
