After beginning construction in the fall of 2014, the City of Columbus held its grand opening celebration and ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Driving Park municipal swimming pool and renovated Recreation Center on September 10, 2016. The project was able to capitalize on combining both uses to create the multi-use facility providing users with an all-season destination. The former pool site, located approximately .5 miles away at the existing Fairwood Park, was closed in 2008 due to City budgetary constraints and, subsequently, fell into disrepair. When the City decided to reopen the pool facility, it was only natural to group it with the renovations of the Driving Park Recreation Center. Addressing the community’s needs, the recreation center nearly doubled in size to accommodate a new gymnasium, kitchen and learning spaces. The pool now adequately suits teaching programs and recreation needs with a 6-lane, 25-yard competition length pool which connects to a large free-swim area in addition to a towering double water slide and separate diving well for the adventurous user. There is a tot pool for the littlest swimmers and a zero-entry feature for toddlers and waders alike. The zero-entry also accommodates ADA requirements for comfortable access for all. MKSK provided full site planning services through design, implementation and construction completion.
