COMPREHENSIVE PLAN AND DOWNTOWN PLAN | 'IMAGINE CHARLESTON'
The City of Charleston embarked on a city-wide study to guide its future growth and development, to re-establish itself as the social, cultural, recreational, and business capital of the Appalachian region. The development of the ‘Imagine Charleston’ plan includes extensive interactive engagement with area stakeholders and review of past planning efforts in order to recommend a future course of action for an appropriate approach to helping Charleston become recognized as a progressive City on the rise where economic development and livability fuse together for the benefit of the entire Kanawha Valley region.
The planning and design process included in-depth reconnaissance of community context constituting land uses, regulations, transportation, neighborhoods, downtown, housing, and infrastructure, all guided by a market study and retail-based economic analysis. A future land use plan and urban design plan for the downtown was crafted which has formed the basis for detailed recommendations for community development. This was supported by actionable implementation items and urban design concepts for target areas identified for catalytic projects. Organizational and funding strategies were highlighted that is assisting the implementation of the action items.
