Rethinking a downtown’s ‘front lawn’ to be inviting to the local community and the region

Located along the Maumee River, Promenade Park is often considered Toledo’s ‘front lawn’. The Promenade Park Redevelopment project is the first step in the redevelopment of downtown Toledo’s urban waterfront and will be a cataylst for economic development and revitalization in the downtown area.

Site enhancements included doubling the size of the park by raising an adjacent streetscape to meet the existing site and sloping the site from the street to the river.

The 1-acre roof deck over a single-story parking structure offered an opportunity to raise the site grade to street level and create space for an interactive fountain with pop jets and light animation, while integrating an open lawn for enjoying the multimedia display screen mounted on an adjacent multi-story garage. The lower level park provides access to the Maumee River Promenade and features concert lawn, food truck path, integrated public sculpture, feature identification signs, fire pit, seating benches and new pedestrian walkways.

Downtown Toledo’s newly reimagined ‘front lawn’ provides a welcoming public space for residents and the community to enjoy.
