The site design for the new headquarters of two local non-profit organizations brings playgrounds, outdoor classrooms, paved terraces, and gardening areas to the DC community.

Stanton Commons is the headquarters for two local non-profit organizations, Martha’s Table and Community of Hope, who work with families and children. Situated at a high point in Southeast Washington, the site has incredible views of the Washington monument and downtown DC. Site walls define terraced meadow areas that transition to food production as operations grow.

Two paved terraces bound the meadow planting and will be used for dining, small group activities, and events. MKSK also designed a perimeter site security system of fences and gates. In order to highlight and provide additional screening, vine screens were used as fencing at pedestrian entrances and the early childhood playground.

Planting design relied heavily on native plants and since children are the primary users of the site, plant toxicity was of primary concern. A rainwater cistern helps supplement watering needs.
