A Campus Plan for a 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to meeting the growing needs of Dayton’s east side neighborhoods through urban agriculture, food access, education, restoration, and sustainable energy.

Mission of Mary Cooperative is a catalyst and partner for sustainable urban development in Dayton, Ohio focused on four key competencies:

Energy Sustainability in Urban Neighborhoods by exploring plans and funds for increasing sustainable energy efficiency.

Operating an Urban Food System by maintaining a network of urban agricultural plots in and distributing food through local markets.

Operating an Urban Sustainability Learning Center and providing opportunities for experiential learning and applied research for the University of Dayton, PK-12 Public and Catholic Schools along with and Community and Church Groups.

Engaging the Twin Towers Neighborhood. The cooperative is largely run by volunteers and community members, and hosts community gatherings, cooking classes, and delivers produce while maintaining numerous garden plots around the city.

MKSK provided Campus Planning through our Community Impact Studio to help align the campus to better meet the Mission of Mary goals and services to the community.

Working closely with the nonprofit’s leadership, MKSK identified key strategies to further engage the surrounding community, enhance day-to-day farm operations, and build on sustainable practices as they plan for continued growth at the main campus.

MKSK also worked to produce capital campaign material to tell the story of Mission of Mary, its vision for “serving the community, and opportunities for future partnerships and donations.”

Building on the cooperative’s vision for a vibrant and sustainable campus, MKSK worked with staff to craft a capital campaign and master plan that integrates key opportunities to expand operations, educate the community, and provide passive recreation space for the neighborhood.

With the community in mind, MKSK developed the campus master plan to maximize programmatic function while preserving and enhancing the existing site features. Accessibility, community gathering space, and opportunities for discovery and education are central to the design.
